Distribution of Arable Land based on Satellite data The distribution of British arable land was prepared from images captured
during the years 1989-1990 by the earth-observation satellite LANDSAT.
By the use of images from two seasons (winter and summer) it was possible
to tell whether the land was tilled and therefore likely to be in arable.
Classified land-cover data were published in 1993 as the Land Cover Map
of Great Britain (http://www.ceh.ac.uk/data/lcm/).
The image shown here was generated from a derived dataset with pixel size
1-km, which has been published as part of the Countryside Information
System (http://www.cis-web.org.uk/).
For each 1-km square, the dominant land cover was coloured yellow (arable),
red (grassland) or black (other). |
