Selection of tetrads for
random sampling
Tetrads were selected from the arable regions of the country using the
Landcover Map of Great Britain (Fuller, Groom & Jones, 1994). The
process of selection was as follows.
Stage 1
Select those 100-km squares with at least 15% arable land. There were
22 such squares.
Stage 2
Decide how many tetrads are to be sampled in each selected 100-km square.
The number of tetrads is in proportion to the total land area (not merely
arable area) of each 100-km square . The purpose of this requirement was
to avoid over-sampling 100-km squares with little land area. A secondary
purpose was to spread the sample out, so that the most intensively arable
parts of the country would not completely dominate the selection.
